Parsnip Yogurt Mezze – Baby-led Weaning

This baby-led weaning recipe is simply delicious, flavoursome and perfect for babies from the age of 7 months – once first tastes and flavours have been accepted, and baby is comfortable with finger foods.

With four unique flavours blended together – nutmeg, garlic, black pepper and yogurt, this mezze will be a real treat. Similar to Greek tzatziki, this gorgeous, creamy, calcium-rich mezze will add lots of aromatic flavour to some soft finger foods. Very soft pitta (helps if you slice in it half to make it super thin), or very soft bread.

Total prep and cooking time: 15 mins
Makes 13 ice-cubes

1 tbsp olive oil
¼ tsp minced garlic
1 parsnip – washed, peeled, cored, chopped
1 sweet apple – washed, peeled, cored, chopped
1 tbsp full-fat Greek yogurt
Pinch of ground nutmeg
Pinch of ground black pepper

Heat the olive oil in a saucepan, add the garlic, parsnip and apple and sauté on low heat for a few minutes, then add 2 tablespoons of water and let the apple and parsnip steam (covered) for 5–8 minutes (depending on the thickness of the pieces) until they are both tender.

Once tender, pop into a food processor (or use a handheld blender) and blend until smooth. Add the yogurt, nutmeg and black pepper and combine well. Spread thinly over a very soft pitta slice (once your child has mastered soft finger foods) and cut into strips for your little one. Add more or less to a pitta slice depending on your little one’s taste buds.

Banana and Coconut Pancakes – Stage 2 Finger Food

banana-and-coconut-pancakesI love Pancake Day!! Back in the 80’s there was only one way to eat your pancakes… a sprinkling of sugar and a dash of fresh lemon! Simply delicious. Thinking about it, that’s probably one of my earliest memories of loving the sweet and sour flavour combination.

Whilst delicious, there was a lot of refined sugar involved so it was definitely an occasional treat. As I grew I realised there were lots of just-as-delicious flavour combinations to try with pancakes. So when I was weaning Aaliyah, I was  keen to offer her a healthy, flavoursome alternative – one with natural sugars that she would love. Here it is below, inspired by Caribbean flavours – banana, coconut, allspice and cinnamon. This is a fantastic baby-led weaning recipe for babies from 7 months and up. Great for older children of school age too. So give this one a go with your little one this Pancake Day. It’s healthy, and makes a fab, yummy alternative.

Perfect for tickling a baby’s sweet and savoury taste buds. Beetroot may encourage the production of disease-fighting white blood cells and contains folic acid and iron. Broccoli is also rich in vitamin C while turmeric is known as an anti-inflammatory spice. With all these immune-boosting ingredients, this yummy mash may help to keep colds and flu at bay. Flavour-led Weaning: A Fantastic Weaning Method to Prevent Fussy Eaters

Flavour-led weaning, as I now call it, developed as a result of weaning my daughter Aaliyah a few years back. Of course I didn’t realise at the time that’s what I was doing. The closest I could get to explaining it was referring to it as Indian Baby Food – weaning with aromatic flavours, herbs and spices. But actually, I was doing more than that. I wasn’t only feeding my little one Indian food (those of you who have my first book ‘Easy Indian Super Meals’ will know this), I was feeding her a range of different cuisines – Spanish, Italian, British, but all with an aromatic-Indian twist based on my culinary heritage, to keep Aaliyah’s palate as broad as possible, and to keep mealtimes fun and interesting.

I developed flavoursome weaning recipes because the weaning books, websites, blogs and forums I was researching when I started Aaliyah’s weaning journey were quite frankly, bland, boring and nothing like family meals I cooked at home. It seemed strange, to me, to wean her with meals that were completely unlike meals I would be feeding her in the future, and was convinced I would have a battle on my hands when I transitioned her over to our family meals – offering her flavours she had never tried before, and yet expecting her to eat them with no protest.

Banana Suji Halwa (Semolina Dessert) for Babies


So this recipe is a golden oldie… literally! It’s golden appearance and soft texture makes it a wonderful treat for baby, and taken from my first ever ebook published 4 ½ years ago, it’s definitely an oldie. I decided to publish this recipe at the request of one of my lovely followers, so I hope you all enjoy.

Suji (sooji) is a traditional Indian and Pakistani pudding made from semolina.  Semolina is made from durum wheat, so provided your little one doesn’t have a wheat allergy, this one will go down a treat! Aaliyah loved this one – well-mashed, naturally sweet and with tiny little soft lumps, is perfect for working your little one’s tongue muscles to help speech develop. It’s also super easy and quick to cook – ready in just 15 minutes. Suitable for babies from 7 months onwards.
